Award Nominations Due May 11
NWA Award Nominations Due May 11, 2023

Those of us fortunate to have received an award in honor of our meaningful, dedicated work definitely understand the powerful motivation this recognition can bring to our professional and personal lives. Being able to share that sense of encouragement to our valued friends and colleagues can be as inspiring for the nominator, as it is for the recipient.

The National Weather Association (NWA) believes in highlighting and celebrating individuals, teams and organizations whose outstanding efforts in meteorology and related sciences deserve special recognition. NWA members are invited to use the NWA Annual Awards nomination process to recommend those who should be honored for their work at the 2023 NWA Annual Meeting in August. The NWA Annual Awards Program helps bring awareness to all the ways that representatives of the weather enterprise inspire innovation, collaboration, and the promotion of weather awareness. There are numerous awards spanning research, operations, and academics. The nomination process is simpler than you may realize, and we encourage you to review information provided on the NWA Annual Awards Program webpage. Nominations are due by May 11, 2023. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Awards Committee at [email protected] or [email protected]

Earth Day
April 22 2023 is Earth Day Graphic.
Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

Today, Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local policy changes.

Now, the fight for a clean environment continues with increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more and more apparent every day.

As the awareness of our climate crisis grows, so does civil society mobilization, which is reaching a fever pitch across the globe today. Disillusioned by the low level of ambition following the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015 and frustrated with international environmental lethargy, citizens of the world are rising up to demand far greater action for our planet and its people.

Fire Weather Master Class Seal Holder CEU Opportunity
Originally held on March 7, 2023, the NWA hosted its first-ever entirely virtual Master Class. See the original description below.
*Please note: This recording does not include the live breakout sessions. We encourage you to pause the video at these times to work through the exercises on your own.
**Seal holders: Earn 1 CEU for your NWA Seal recertification when you watch this video. Submit a paragraph about your take-aways with your recertification materials. Contact [email protected] with questions.

Do you want to learn how to forecast wildfires or “brush up” on your fire weather forecasting skills? The Master Class is an opportunity for meteorologists from multiple sectors to come together and learn about a specific meteorological topic from expert proctors in an interactive and fun setting. The course will last around two hours long and is structured in the format of a case study. After learning about how to forecast fire weather, participants will walk through the forecasting process using data from a recent high-impact fire weather event. In addition, participants will consider how to message the evolving wildfire threat through multiple interactive mediums.

2023 Lightning Fatalities Update

From John Jensenius:

Unfortunately, there were two fatal lightning incidents during this past weekend.

On Saturday, April 15th, lightning struck a tree in Chester, Pennsylvania, causing a large branch to fall onto a vehicle, killing the driver.

On Sunday, lightning struck a 39-year-old man while boating on the Indian River in Brevard County, Florida.

These are the first two lightning-related deaths of the year in the U.S. and the first in each of the two states.  Based on the past 10 years, the U.S, averages 1 lightning death through April 16th.

The death in Pennsylvania is the first lightning death since July 16th, 2021, when a 71-year-old man was stuck on a golf course.  There have now been 8 lightning-related deaths in Pennsylvania during the past 10 years.

The death in Florida is the first lightning death since September 15, 2022, when two boys were struck on a lake in Orlando.  There have now been 52 lightning-related deaths in Florida in the past 10 years.

Boating is the third leading activity leading to lightning deaths in the U.S.  Since 2006, there have now been 25 lightning deaths related to boating.
